Effect of Black Cumin Extract on Hemoglobin Levels in Adolescent Girls with Anemia at SMPN 22 Samarinda
Abstract
Anemia is a continuation of the impact of macro and micronutrient deficiencies. Black cumin is a spice that is known as an herbal medicine for anemia therapy because it contains the active compound thymoquinone and nutrients that are able to help in the process of forming blood cells. This study aims to analyze the effect of giving black cumin extract on hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls with anemia. This study is a pseudo-experimental research with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The sample consisted of 15 adolescent girls with anemia who were 12-14 years old. The intervention was carried out by administering black cumin extract for 15 days. The results showed that the administration of black cumin extract to adolescent girls for 15 days had an effect on hemoglobin levels, the average hemoglobin level before the intervention was 11.05 g. After the intervention, the average hemoglobin level increased to 12.47 g/dL. Statistical tests using the Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference between hemoglobin levels before and after the intervention (p = 0.001). An average increase in hemoglobin levels of 1.36 g/dL showed that black cumin extract was effective in increasing hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls with anemia.
